The Garden in Spring, 1847 - 1850

Comments - Lovely scene of travelers in a garden on a spring night, the evening sky framed by a blossoming cherry tree. In the center, a beauty looks out from an elegant enclosed palanquin, smiling happily over her shoulder. An attendant stands behind her, carrying a floral robe over her back. The nobleman at right grins as he looks back towards the two women in the house at left, who look out of the open doorway. He wears a coat with a design of mandarin ducks over a gray kimono and chunky wooden sandals, a servant crouching at his side. Beautiful detail and color in this attractive subject, including embossing in the white kimono trim. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
