Comments - Fantastic scene from the famous battle at the Taira fortress of Ichi-no-Tani in 1184. Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men attacked the castle from the mountains above, rushing down the steep hill of Hiyodorigoe to mount the surprise assault. Here, Yoshitsune and his men are gathered atop the craggy peak, waiting for the moment to attack. The brave general sits on a white horse on the overhanging cliff at left, looking down at the Minamoto fleet arriving to attack the fortress simultaneously by sea. At right, the loyal warrior monk Benkei stands before a rushing waterfall, gripping a naginata, a small arsenal of weapons at his back. An incredibly dramatic image, with the tree roots hanging from the precipitous cliff, and warriors clustered among the pine trees and rugged rocks. A great choice for a samurai enthusiast.
