Bando Hikosaburo as a Samurai with a Naginata, 1877

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Bando Hikosaburo as a samurai with a naginata taking a brief break during a battle to tighten the purple sash around his waist. He looks ahead with a grim, determined frown, wearing a blue kimono with a burnished geometric pattern and red floral pants over his suit of armor. Fighting continues on a bridge in the background, shown in dark silhouette against the night sky. A nice expressive figure. Includes metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the blade.
