Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Bando Hikosaburo as a Samurai with a Naginata, 1877

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Bando Hikosaburo as a samurai with a naginata taking a brief break during a battle to tighten the purple sash around his waist. He looks ahead with a grim, determined frown, wearing a blue kimono with a burnished geometric pattern and red floral pants over his suit of armor. Fighting continues on a bridge in the background, shown in dark silhouette against the night sky. A nice expressive figure. Includes metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the blade.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at top edges from previous mounting. Tiny hole in margin, repaired, repaired. Slight soiling, a few tiny spots, a couple creases at edges. Please see photos for details.
