Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nakamura Shikan as a Samurai in a Lion Vest, 1876

Comments - Great image of Nakamura Shikan as a samurai on the battlefield, wearing a red vest patterned with lions over a suit of armor, his personal banner flying from a black lacquer pole above his back. He stares to the side with a tight-lipped frown as shots streak across the night sky, fighting figures in silhouette beyond. A bold kabuki portrait, nicely composed and detailed with burnishing on the black lacquer pole, the black trim on the vest, and the fan, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the banner.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at top edges from previous mounting. Tear at edge, repaired, repaired. Slight soiling, small crease at edge. Please see photos for details.
