Series; Tales of Old Japan (Yamato Monogatari)

Ashikari, 1897 - Handsome scene illustrating the 10th century "Yamato Monogatari," a collection of stories and poetry from the Heian era. This image depicts "Ashikari" (Cutting Reeds), a play based on a story of love and loss. Here, a young reed cutter runs away from a nobleman who's palanquin is stopped beneath the trees behind him, the distraught daimyo waving his hands to signal the farmer to stop. A pile of cut reeds lies on the ground between the men, and the reed cutter has a sickle tucked at his waist. Tall grasses grow along the water's edge at right. Nicely drawn and shaded, detailed with embossed lines on the water.
