Scene from Toshitoku Soga Matsu no shimadai, 1857 - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Toshitoku Soga Matsu no shimadai." Two samurai are fighting with a couple of commoners in the street below the courtesan Takao's window. She slides open the shoji screen, holding a lantern outside to discover the source of the commotion. One of the warriors looks up at her with a frown, grabbing an attacker by the collar as he extends a small parcel in his other hand. His companion subdues his enemy by forcing him to the ground, wrenching his arm behind him. The three principal actors are Kataoka Nizaemon VIII, Nakamura Fukusuke I, and Iwai Kumesaburo III. An intriguing scene with a nicely detailed setting.
