From an untitled series of horizontal oban kabuki prints

Horizontal Oban Kabuki Prints by Toyokuni III - Handsome design from an untitled series of horizontal kabuki prints by Toyokuni III dating from 1847 - 1852. The horizontal oban format is an interesting departure from the more commonly seen vertical oban actor prints, allowing Toyokuni III to create detailed settings for the characters. These images provide a nice context for the interaction between the figures. Some prints feature deluxe publishing treatments such as burnishing or embossing. An interesting complement to Toyokuni III's more well-known vertical kabuki designs.

Arguing with a Daimyo, 1847 - 1852 - Handsome kabuki scene of a samurai arguing with a daimyo. He leans forward aggressively, towering above the seated nobleman, who looks up with a worried expression. At left, a retainer throws his head back with a distraught expression, unable to believe what is happening. The room is beautifully detailed with a scene of pine trees along the back wall and fine reed blinds. Nice expressive figures. An unusual horizontal format for a single panel kabuki design.
