Horizontal Oban Kabuki Prints by Toyokuni III - Handsome design from an untitled series of horizontal kabuki prints by Toyokuni III dating from 1847 - 1852. The horizontal oban format is an interesting departure from the more commonly seen vertical oban actor prints, allowing Toyokuni III to create detailed settings for the characters. These images provide a nice context for the interaction between the figures. Some prints feature deluxe publishing treatments such as burnishing or embossing. An interesting complement to Toyokuni III's more well-known vertical kabuki designs.

The 47 Ronin, Act 5: The Departure of Okaru, 1847 - 1852 - Handsome kabuki scene from the famous "Kanadehon Chushingura," the drama about the 47 ronin. Here, the ronin Kampei returns home from hunting after accidentally killing a man in the dark, mistaking him for a boar, only to find that his wife, Okaru, is leaving. The beauty has sold herself to a brothel to obtain the money needed for her father to join the vendetta against Moronao. With a straw raincoat and hat hanging from his gun, Kampei grabs the end of the pole of the palanquin in an attempt to stop it. The beauty smiles at him, knowing that she has done the honorable thing, while a man at right scratches his head in a puzzled manner. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Hayano Kampei, Bando Shuka I as Okaru, and Ichimira Takenojo V as Ichimonjiya. A different treatment of the typical scene used for this act, with an attractive natural setting.
