Tiger: Watonai, 1854

Series; Japanese Heroes for the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac

Tiger: Watonai, 1854 - Terrific portrait of the great warrior Kato Kiyomasa (Watonai) confronting a tiger in Korea. Kiyomasa was one of the three senior commanders during the Seven-Year War with Korea, and he had the opportunity to hunt tigers while there. He leans back slightly as he fearlessly faces the animal, his feet spread firmly apart and his hands thrown out at his sides. He wears a fine suit of armor over brocade pants, and a helmet topped with slender horns. The cat appears to be climbing down a snowy slope to attack. A great Kuniyoshi samurai subject, nicely composed with fine detail in the armor, embossing on the white fur of the tiger's chest, and a handsome natural setting.
