Series; Comparison of Figures in Edo Purple

Daihachi (Number 8), 1852 - Terrific spring scene of Prince Genji arriving at a palace for a visit. He is greeted on the verandah by two beauties, who bow respectfully, one holding a parcel wrapped in a blue cloth. He grins shyly at the younger woman, tilting his head down as he looks at her, a folding fan in hand. His sword bearer crouches beside him holding his weapon upright. The young nobleman wears a blue kimono with a decorative border tucked into hakama pants shaded from tan to white to blue with a delicate pattern of grasses. Cherry blossoms frame a view of the water beyond, with a softly shaded blue sky above. An attractive design, nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono trim, and burnishing on the black kimono and the black lacquer trim on the railing.
