Ichikawa Ebizo in Shibaraku by Shunko (1743 - 1812)

Shunko (1743 - 1812) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Ichikawa Ebizo in Shibaraku

A Special 1938 Takamizawa Group - Founded in 1911, the Takamizawa Publisher of Tokyo has published some of the finest reprints of classic ukiyo-e designs. Drawing on the traditions and methods of the Edo era, the company produced reprints with the utmost care and great attention to detail, masterfully reproducing color, line work and even wood grain detail. Published in 1938, this handsome reprint group features designs by master artists such as Utamaro, Kiyonaga, Eishi, Hokusai, Hiroshige, Sharaku, and others. Each features a Takamizawa publisher seal on the  reverse. A great opportunity to acquire a high quality reprint of a famous Edo era subject.

Comments - One of Shunko's masterworks, this portrait of Ebizo in full kabuki makeup is one of the great print portraits of the 18th century. A dramatic, knockout design showing Ebizo, his face painted with red stage makeup in the lead role for the play "Shibaraku" or "Wait a Minute," frowning as he looks to the side. His flared wig and voluminous robe adds to his imposing appearance. An excellent piece and a rare subject to find in a reprint. Would make an impressive framed display.

Artist - Shunko (1743 - 1812)

Image Size - 14 3/4" x 10" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Small hole at edge, repaired. Toning. Please note, this print does not have the Takamizawa seal on the reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
