Nue

Series; Fifty Noh Figures in Color, 1938

Fifty Noh Figures in Color - A student of noted artist Tsukioka Kogyo, Sofu Matsuno is known for his Noh woodblock prints. In 1938, he completed the series "Fifty Noh Figures in Color," published by Yokyoku-kai Hakkosho. Each print features a single Noh actor in costume, and is mounted along the top edge to a solid colored backing sheet patterned with the three small pine trees that appear alongside the higashigakari (bridgeway) that leads to the Noh stage. The trees are printed in a dark gold metallic pigment, a deluxe printing technique. These charming, sketch-like designs have a sense of freshness and immediacy, presented in an attractive decorative format. A nice choice to collect or display.
