Opening of the New Azuma Bridge in Tokyo, 1888

Comments - Fantastic panoramic view of the impressive steel Azuma Bridge over the Sumida River in Tokyo, which opened in 1887. The towering structure stretches over the water, packed with pedestrians, rickshaws, and a horse-drawn carriage. An officer in uniform stands at right, the little boy next to him wearing a red top and a red tam with a pompom. Several boats move up and down the water, with a small blossoming cherry tree framing the view in the center. A fascinating look at the first steel bridge in Tokyo, with wonderful architectural detail and attractive color.
