Ladies' Pastimes

Comments - Attractive scene of upper-class ladies enjoying a variety of pastimes. At left, a beauty kneels next to a low folding screen with a reed pipe called a sho resting on her lap. The woman beside her holds a poem slip. In the center, a beauty pauses during her sewing to chat with a companion over her shoulder. At right, a woman practices ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging while a wisp of smoke rises from an incense burner on a red lacquer tray. Lovely color and detail in this handsome subject, with embossing on the white kimono trim.
