The Soga Brothers in Suketsune's Lodge, 1844

Comments - Terrific scene from the famous night attack of the Soga Brothers at the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The young brothers waited years to avenge the death of their father at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune, who accompanied Yoritomo on his hunt. Here, the brothers have entered the hunting lodge and stand over the sleeping Suketsune. At right, Soga Juro grins happily as he gestures to his brother, his sword in hand. Goro glares back at him, pointing at the nobleman, ready to strike. A flaming torch rests against the sword rack on the floor nearby, and a cricket clings to the shade of a lamp. At right, the beauty Shosho watches with her mouth concealed behind her sleeve, having let the brothers into Suketsune's room. A fantastic design with expressive figures and a beautifully detailed setting. A great subject for a collector interested in this timeless tale of honor and revenge.
