Striking a Spark for Luck

Series; Thirty-two Fashionable Physiognomies, 1869

Thirty-two Fashionable Physiognomies - Attractive half-length portrait from Kunichika's early beauty series "Thirty-two Fashionable Physiognomies." The number thirty-two in the title is a playful reference to the thirty-two notable features of Buddha. Each design shows a contemporary beauty in a scene from daily life, reading, enjoying a boat ride, or relaxing. These images are beautifully detailed with extremely fine line work in the hair and soft bokashi shading in the background. Some feature deluxe publishing techniques such as embossing or burnishing. A rarely seen Kunichika bijin series from early in his career.

Striking a Spark for Luck - Here, a woman off scene strikes a flint to produce a spark before a geisha goes out on a call. Sparks were considered omens of good fortune, so it was customary when a beauty left for an assignment to send her off with a few sparks for luck. The woman smiles happily as she watches her companion, tucking a purse wrapped in a roll of tissues into her obi. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black lacquer part of the lantern and soft shading in the background. The first time we've offered this design.
