9 p.m. (Gogo kuji), 1891 - Fantastic portrait of a performer at the Niwaka Festival in the Yoshiwara. The young geisha shown here is dressed in men's attire, ready to take part in the Lion Dance, the grinning mask of the lion costume behind her. She wears a blue and gray striped outer robe tucked into plaid hakama pants, one sleeve pushed down to reveal an elegant red kimono patterned with dragons and peonies. She holds a blue fan decorated with peony blossoms and holds a lantern aloft in her other hand. The pocket-watch-shaped inset at upper left shows two feathery elements, part of the tail on the lion costume. A terrific depiction of a beauty taking part in this important annual festival. The softly shaded gray background sets off the vibrant colors of the composition. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono trim and embossing on the lion's white fur. A very attractive design from this handsome series.
