Nakamura Shikan as a Samurai in a Lion Vest, 1876

Comments - Great image of Nakamura Shikan as a samurai on the battlefield, wearing a red vest patterned with lions over a suit of armor, his personal banner flying from a black lacquer pole above his back. He stares to the side with a tight-lipped frown as shots streak across the night sky, fighting figures in silhouette beyond. A bold kabuki portrait, nicely composed and detailed with burnishing on the black lacquer pole, the black trim on the vest, and the fan, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the banner.
