Series; Titles of Dance Descriptions

Titles of Dance Descriptions - Designed between 1856 and 1858, Toyokuni III's large series "Titles of Dance Descriptions" presents scenes from a variety of kabuki plays, including some from performances a few years prior to publication. Each includes expressive figures in nicely detailed settings, and some feature deluxe treatments such as burnishing or embossing. The title cartouche take the form of two overlapping books, with text featuring the name of the play, the date of the performance, and the roles. These handsome designs are seldom seen, and are a nice choice for a kabuki enthusiast or Toyokuni III collector.

Scene from Wakaki no Umesato minoyatsufusa, 1857 - Terrific scene from the kabuki play "Wakaki no Umesato minoyatsufusa," a tale about the famous Eight Dog Warriors, showing a struggle at the water's edge. A beauty has knocked a man to the ground with an oar as he grabs onto the makeshift weapon. She cowers behind her kimono sleeve, afraid of the commoner at her side, who throws his arm out in alarm. An angry looking fellow emerges from the rushes at left, scowling at the confrontation. Notice the playing dogs on the commoner's under robe. From left, the actors are Seki Sanjuro III, Iwai Kumesaburo III, and Nakamura Fukusuke I. A handsome design, nicely composed and beautifully shaded with fine wood grain impression.
