From an untitled series of horizontal oban kabuki prints

Horizontal Oban Kabuki Prints by Toyokuni III - Handsome design from an untitled series of horizontal kabuki prints by Toyokuni III dating from 1847 - 1852. The horizontal oban format is an interesting departure from the more commonly seen vertical oban actor prints, allowing Toyokuni III to create detailed settings for the characters. These images provide a nice context for the interaction between the figures. Some prints feature deluxe publishing treatments such as burnishing or embossing. An interesting complement to Toyokuni III's more well-known vertical kabuki designs.

The Palace Scene, 1847 - 1852 - Dramatic depiction of the palace scene from a classic kabuki play based on the true story of the disputed succession of the Date Clan. The loyal nursemaid Masaoka has been charged with protecting young Tsuruchiyo, the heir to the clan, who is in danger of being poisoned. Masaoka has kept him in private quarters, asking her own son, Senmatsu, to taste his food. When Senmatsu becomes ill after eating poisoned sweets offered by the evil Yashio, the villainess quickly stabs the boy to hide her plot, claiming he must pay for his rude behavior. Standing beside Yashio, the stoic Masaoka must watch as her own son dies, holding the young nobleman in her arms. An unusual horizontal oban format kabuki print, beautifully detailed.
