Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Street Knight Sukeroku and Rival

Comments - Terrific illustration from the popular kabuki play "Sukeroku" showing the young street knight, Sukeroku, who is actually one of the Soga Brothers in disguise, confronting the elderly samurai Ikyu. Both are in love with the beautiful courtesan Agemaki, who watches at left with a shy smile. Sukeroku stares at his rival with a defiant frown, his chin tilted upwards as he leans forward. Ikyu glares back at him with a tightlipped scowl, his long white hair and beard flowing over his green dragon and cloud print robe. The fellow at lower right is the white sake seller. A handsome design with large expressive figures, beautifully detailed with embossing on the white hair and beard and burnishing on Sukeroku's black kimono and the simulated black lacquer frame.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling, a few marks. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
