Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Jihizo, 1861

Comments - Expressive portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Jihizo in the play "Honcho nijushiko." The samurai has been arguing with his brother, Yokozo, over the secret books of strategy that belonged to their father, the great strategist Yamamoto Kansuke. Here, he grimaces with rage as he wields a shovel as a weapon during the fight, wearing a blue kimono with a bold tie-dyed pattern radiating from the neckline. A great design with strong graphic appeal.
