The Pirate Kezori by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Pirate Kezori

Comments - Bold portrait of the famous pirate Kezori striking a pose on the deck of his ship from the kabuki play commonly known as "Kezori," based on a true story of smugglers. He stares to the side with a determined frown as he balances one hand atop an ornate pipe. He is dressed in an exotic purple shirt patterned with dragons and trimmed with a ruffled collar, a heavy red robe draped over his shoulder. His longer hair sticks out atop his head, giving him a somewhat disheveled appearance. At left, the frightened courtesan Kojoro cowers behind her sleeve, wearing a colorful kimono with an embossed white collar. A terrific dramatic image.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. Pinholes in corners, a few holes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few stains. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
