American Steam Train in Motion, 1861

Comments - Terrific, rare depiction of an American steam ship in motion. Crowds of men and women are gathered in the foreground, the women wearing bonnets and dresses with full hoop skirts. The group includes several army or navy officers, dressed in black button-front jackets with fringed epaulets and helmets or top hats. Smoke billows from the stacks of the train, which more closely resembles a paddle wheel steamship. The U. S. flag and red title cartouche provide notes of color in the almost monochromatic night color scheme. Beautifully detailed with extensive burnishing on the black jackets and the woman's black skirt. Yoshikazu likely based his design on illustrations in foreign newspapers. An incredible Yokohama-e design.
