Nakamura Shikan as a Sumo Wrestler, 1877

Comments - Dynamic kabuki scene of Nakamura Shikan as a sumo wrestler using a wooden beam as a weapon, gripping it with both hands as he looks up, an enraged expression on his face. He wears a striking red and white kimono patterned with a fierce hawk and slanting gray raindrops. The silhouettes of men with what appear to be guns can be seen behind him beneath a red and white flag. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair, bokashi shading in the night sky, and burnishing on the black kimono collar.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at top edges from previous mounting. Slight soiling, small crease at edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
