Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Unhappy Beauty Waiting, 1864

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych showing a beauty waiting outside the doorway of a home, frowning unhappily as a samurai greets her, holding a wicker lantern in his hand. The beauty is accompanied by a young girl carrying a black lacquer tray with an object on it. Inside, an elegantly dressed courtesan looks up from playing the koto, surprised at the visitor. She wears a red kimono patterned with a flower cart holding a basket of colorful peonies, her hair arranged in two loops adorned with combs and hairpins. The man seems caught between the two beauties, grimacing unhappily, a flute in hand. His robe features a blossoming plum tree. An intriguing subject, nicely detailed and attractively colored.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)
