Series; Modern Style Set of the Provinces in Edo Brocade, 1852

Mimasaka and Bizen Provinces - Handsome print illustrating kabuki scenes for Mimasaka and Bizen provinces. The upper design for Mimasaka features the characters Nagoya Sanzaburo and Fuwa Banzaemon in the play "Sanyushi." Sanzaburo appears in the foreground, pausing in the snow under a pine tree. He wears a straw raincoat and carries a hat, looking up as clumps of snow fall from the branches above. Banzaemon is shown in the distance. Below, the image for Bizen Province shows Nakamura Utaemon IV as the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi in the play "Chigusa no akitsuki ni Miyamoto" performed at the Kawarazaki Theater in the 8th month of 1851. The wild-haired warrior pushes aside stalks of bamboo, peering through the foliage with a grim but determined expression. Wonderful fine line work in his flowing hair. A great design from this interesting and rarely seen series.
