Series; Fifty-four Chapters of Edo Purple, 1852

Chapter 9, Aoi: Ichikawa Danjuro VIII - Handsome design of kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as a young warrior, looking over his shoulder with a distressed expression, his mouth slightly agape. The slender figure wears a green brocade kamishimo over a pale pink and white robe patterned with stylized phoenixes and golden yellow waves, his hair tied back into a thick ponytail with cord. The scene above shows a nobleman kneeling on a cushion, his young sword bearer at his side. Blossoming pinks or carnations form a border between the portrait and the background. Nice fine line work in the hair and delicate embossing in the white kimono collar.
