Original Edo era Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtiers Visiting a Beauty Surimono Print

Japanese Woodblock Surimono - Surimono are an exclusive subcategory of Japanese woodblock prints. Poetry clubs commissioned these designs for distribution to a small audience of members, most often as New Year's greetings. These privately published images included a wonderful range of subjects and lavish printing techniques such as embossing, burnishing, and metallic pigments. Since surimono were not sold commercially, the print runs were very small and original Edo era surimono are incredibly rare in the market today.

Comments - Attractive surimono design of two courtiers paying a visit to a beauty, who remains partially hidden behind a fine reed blind. The nobleman in the white robe kneels to place a stalk of leafy bamboo before her, while his companion watches with a smile. He wears a black robe with a beautiful embossed pattern, the poem in the space surrounding him. Clouds frame the scene, with a pine and a plum tree dotted with buds and blossoms at lower right. Includes metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the clouds, the tips of the pine branches, and the centers of some blossoms. A charming scene with wonderful detail.
