Iwai Kumesaburo III as Tachibana-hime and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Eboshiori Motome, 1852

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait from the play "Imoseyama Onna Teikin" featuring Iwai Kumesaburo III as Tachibana-hime or Princess Tachibana and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Eboshiori Motome. The beauty smiles happily as she looks down at her companion, holding the long sleeve of her robe with both hands. Her kimono is shaded from red to pink and patterned with chrysanthemums and bellflowers, and trimmed with bows. Motome looks up at her with a slightly worried expression, both hands on his sword before him. Autumn grasses and blossoms fill the background against a softly shaded night sky. An attractive design, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
