Kawase's Wife Holding a Dagger, 1888 - Masterful portrait of the lovely wife of Kawase, a samurai in the Omi district who was involved in the rebellion at the end of the shogunate era. Grieving over the loss of her husband, Madame Kawase killed herself. Her eyes lowered and a sorrowful expression on her face, she holds the knife in her hand with which she will commit suicide. A very moving image, from a series of monthly inserts done for the Yamato Shimbun newspaper in 1886-1888.

Image Size - 13" x 8 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Horizontal and vertical folds. Stitching holes at side, repaired. Slight thinning at edge. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
