A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Hiroshi Yoshida - Hiroshi Yoshida was one of the most famous woodblock print artists of the 20th century and a leader in the shin-hanga or new print movement in Japan. He and his son, Toshi, traveled Japan and the globe, examining and sketching the people and places around them. Best known for his beautiful landscapes, his prints are richly detailed and he was especially skilled at capturing the effects of light and reflections on water. After 1925, Hiroshi Yoshida began self-publishing his own works, hiring his own carvers and printers and supervising them very closely. He was a highly skilled carver and printer in his own right, using a special "jizuri" seal to denote the designs he worked on himself. His lovely woodblocks are beautiful examples of 20th century Japanese printmaking.

From the Yoshida Family Archives - This print comes from a group of Toshi Yoshida woodblocks we recently acquired from the Yoshida family. The stock comes directly from the Yoshida archives, and includes some rare designs not commonly seen on the market. Since these prints were not originally intended for sale, some are lacking a printed title or other information in the margins. A great opportunity to acquire a classic Toshi Yoshida design with an interesting provenance.

Hiroshi Yoshida Printing Samples - This print comes from a small group of Hiroshi Yoshida printing samples that we recently acquired. These designs are lacking the key block and/or some colors, so they provide wonderful insight into the complex printing process. They also demonstrate the large number of blocks required to create the rich, layered color and fine shading of Hiroshi Yoshida's beautifully rich prints. A rare chance to acquire a Hiroshi Yoshida woodblock in an unfinished state. We are not sure when these were printed, but each features a printed signature.
