Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych showing the sworn enemies Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon accidentally running into each other in the Yoshiwara one night. At left, Sanza frowns unhappily as he recognizes Banzaemon. He wears a violet coat and a blue kimono with his trademark pattern of swallows flying in rain. At right, Banzaemon glares back at him, a tight-lipped frown on his face. His robe features swirling thunderclouds and red bolts of lightning. Between them, a young girl in a striking phoenix print kimono holds out a bouquet of irises wrapped in paper. A low fence behind them encloses blossoming cherry trees. A great design with fine bokashi shading.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
