Magpie and Lotus

Series; Forty-eight Hawks Drawn from Life, 1859

Forty-eight Hawks Drawn from Life - Terrific design from Sugakudo's most well-known series, "Forty-eight Hawks Drawn from Life," first published in 1859. A student of Hiroshige, Sugakudo was known for his high quality kacho-e, prints of birds and flowers. This lovely series depicts many varieties of birds in their natural habitats (not just hawks), carefully observed and drawn with fine detail and attractive color. They feature delicate cloth embossing in the background, a deluxe printing technique, and some include additional embossing in the feathers. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this series in its collection. A favorite with collectors, these handsome subjects are a wonderful choice to collect or display. This print is from a later edition.
