Yohei and the Palanquin, 1848

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Tsuma Mukae Iro no Fumizuki" of the courtesan Miyako (later Ohaya) emerging from a palanquin. At right, Minakata Jujibei holds up a lantern, smiling as he greets the beauty. At left, Minami Yohei frowns angrily as he watches, one hand resting on the palanquin's pole. A tree frames the night sky above dense foliage behind them. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, Bando Shuka I, Ichimura Uzaemon XII. A nicely detailed design with an attractive setting.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 9 1/8" x 14" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Backed with paper. Faint vertical centerfold. A few small holes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
