A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Battle in the Country, 1883 - Great scene of samurai gathered atop a hillside as a battle rages just below. At right, a general sits on a black horse with a battle fan decorated with the paulownia symbol of the Minamoto clan, his horned helmet topped with a dragon. In the center a young warrior glares at him angrily from astride a restless brown horse. At left center, men try to scale the steep side of a slope to reach the enemies waiting atop it. A lively scene with expressive figures and wonderful detail. The first time we've seen this Chikanobu subject.
