Bando Shinsui as Shinshichi and Nakamura Shikan as Iruka, 1871

Comments - Terrific kabuki double portrait featuring Bando Shinsui at left as Shinshichi and Nakamura Shikan as the evil Lord Iruka. Shishichi stares at the nobleman with tight-lipped frown, a dotted cloth tied around his forehead and his hair sticking out wildly atop his head. Iruka glares back at him angrily as he holds an enormous red lacquer cup filled with sake. He wears a striking red coat eight a dragon on it over a white kimono tucked into blue floral pants. His long hair is pulled back into a low ponytail tied with yarn and a plum blossom sprig. A great design with large expressive figures, detailed with embossing on the white robe and a simulated black lacquer frame.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 18 7/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. Small losses at corners, a few wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
