Shimosa, Snow at Iwahashi, Kiuchi Sogoro, No. 20 - Poignant scene showing Kiuchi Sogoro leaving his family during a snowstorm. A local mayor, he petitioned the shogun directly for tax relief for his town, bypassing the crooked governor Hotta Masanobu. Facing execution for this illegal act, he left his family. His wife and children watch from the window of their home as he turns for a last look over his shoulder, his straw hat already covered with snow. His wife holds an infant in her arms as two young boys look out the window anxiously. A snowy winter landscape makes a lovely setting for this tender parting. The inset above shows a beauty being mistreated by the evil governor. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black obi and a subtle burnished geometric pattern on the black kimono in the inset. A charming and touching subject.
