Policeman and Monk, 1883

Comments - Interesting triptych featuring two kabuki scenes. At left, a policeman with a wooden truncheon tucked under his arm scowls down at a monk dress in a white robe. who glares back at him angrily. In the center, a man watches the pair with a frown while his wife cradles a baby to her chest, tilting her head and looking to the side. A diagonal separates that scene from a couple on the right set against a deep blue background. The beauty grins happily as the fellow looks up at her, his hair cropped short in the latest Meiji fashion. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji, Onoe Kikugoro, Kawarazaki Kunitaro, Nakamura Sojuro, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Iwai Hanshiro. Beautifully detailed with burnishing on the policeman's uniform, the black kimono collars, and the black areas on the man's kimono in the center.
