Accounts of Kagoshima, 1877

Comments - Terrific Yoshitoshi scene of rebels attacking at Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. The rebel leader Saigo Takamori directs his troops from astride his horse at left, gesturing with his sword, wearing a military uniform and plumed hat. The warriors gather around him in the snow carrying guns, dressed in colorful shirts and white pants. At upper right, a line of men shelters behind a low wall along a hilltop, firing at an Imperial warship offshore. Clouds of smoke surround the ship as snow falls quietly against the dark evening sky. A great design with wonderful detail and an expansive natural setting.
