Nakamura Fukusuke I as Nuregami Chogoro and Ichikawa Ichizo III as Hanaregoma Chokichi, 1857

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke I as Nuregami and Ichikawa Ichizo III as Hanaregoma. The pair of sumo wrestlers scowls at each other after Chokichi learns that the older, more experienced sumo Chogoro purposely lost a match to the him in hopes of earning a favor from his patron. The young man grips a dark robe draped over his shoulder with an unhappy frown. Chokichi grimaces up at him as he pushes up the sleeve of his horse patterned kimono. The title cartouche at upper left takes the form of a sumo referee's fan. A great image, nicely composed with fine line work in the hair.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 7 /8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Small paper remnant on reverse at top corner from previous mounting. Slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
