Lion Dance at the Height of Prosperity, 1869

Comments - Terrific depiction of festival performers in the Yoshiwara on a moonlit night. In the center, a beauty carries the head of a lion dance costume with a snarling blue face and flowing hair. The beauties are dressed in matching male attire, wearing colorful kimono tucked into hakama pants, their hair styled in traditional male topknots. Each carries a red paper lantern with black writing and a yellow fan decorated with peonies, the flower typically associated with the lion dance. A full moon glows softly overhead and the street seems oddly quiet except for the performers, although a few patrons can be seen upper story of the teahouses at left. Wonderful color and detail in this interesting subject, including burnishing in the black kimono trim and soft shading in the background.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Vertical centerfold in each panel. A few losses at edges, repaired. A few creases and small spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
