Shimada: Woman Traveler at the Oi River, 1854 - Attractive design from a collaborative Tokaido series featuring landscapes by Hiroshige and figures by Toyokuni III. In the foreground, a beauty leans over to empty her pipe, smiling as she looks up. She wears an intricately patterned blue kimono over a red under robe, tied with a darker blue floral obi. A woven hat hats from a string around her neck, her hairstyle protectively covered with a cloth bearing Genji symbols. On the ground behind her lies a wooden support, like a ladder, to carry people and goods across the wide Oi River crossing, shown above in the landscape by Hiroshige. A line of porters makes its way through the deep blue water towards the far shore, mountains rising above the horizon. A charming design from this handsome series.
