Comments - Interesting scene from the "Tale of Genji" of housecleaning taking place in a mansion. In the center, a maid on her hands and knees scrubs the floor with a cloth, a bucket of water nearby. Her long kimono sleeves are tied into a knot behind her back with a mop tucked into the knot. She smiles over her shoulder at the beauty at right, who holds her little finger to her chin, a broom leaning against the wall behind her. Prince Genji peers through a window in the center, grinning as he watches the women. The wall features a repeated pattern of Genji symbols and hollyhock leaves, with black lacquer window frames hung with reed blinds. An attractive design, beautifully detailed.
