Elizabeth Keith - Born in Scotland, Elizabeth Keith was raised in London, and spend much time drawing although she had no formal training in art. She joined her sister in Japan in 1915, finding inspiration in the Japanese landscape and people, and stayed for nine years. During that time, she traveled throughout Japan, China, the Philippines, and Korea, creating sketches and watercolors during her journeys. In 1919, the shin-hanga publisher Watanabe Shozaburo saw an exhibit of her watercolors in Tokyo, and began creating woodblock prints from her paintings. While she returned to England in 1924, she continued to travel and paint, and Watanabe continued to publish her designs until 1939. Her woodblock subjects are beautifully detailed and drawn, with a wonderful sense of location and a respect for the activities of people as they are going about their daily lives. Watanabe's skillful prints successfully translate the look of her watercolors into the difficult medium of woodblocks, capturing nuances of color and tone that give these images a painterly appearance. She created one hundred woodblock prints during her collaboration with Watanabe. Elizabeth Keith was also one of only a few Western women shin-hanga printmakers in Japan. Her lovely works are a wonderful choice for a shin-hanga collector.
