Winter, 1858 - Terrific winter scene of the bustling area at a temple entrance gate at New Years. At left, Prince Genji peers out the window of his enclosed palanquin with a smile as bearers carry him along. In the center, a man holds a shallow basket above his head filled with auspicious items for the holiday, including a lobster, bitter orange, and a miniature bow and arrows in a wooden pail. At right, two beauties pause to examine an intricate model house held up by a young vendor as another seller thrusts a stack of small graduated boxes at them. Wooden buckets are stacked on the stone pavement nearby. A huge red lantern hangs overheard, flanked by two fierce guardian deities enclosed with low fences. The expensive red pigment used on the temple structure has oxidized to a dark tone. A fantastic image with wonderful detail. The first time we've seen this subject, also in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
