Yamauba and Kintaro, 1887

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych showing the young boy Kintaro and his mother, the wild woman Yamauba, in an encounter with an elderly woodsman. Kintaro carries a large axe painted with flames, suspended from a striped sash. Yamauba stands calmly in the center, holding a small hand drum and a drum stick, looking over her shoulder at her son. The old man watches them sternly at right, pushing up the sleeve of his boldly patterned kimono. A rushing river flows through the background, framed by pine trees covered with colorful vines. A great design with large figures and rich color, detailed with embossing on the old man's white hair and the white kimono trim.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 27 7/8" + margins as shown
