The Treaty in the Peach Orchard, 1881

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the historical tale "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a story about the three warring kingdoms in China during the third century. This triptych illustrates the three leaders, Kwanu, Gentoku, and Chohi, meeting in the peach orchard to take an oath of brotherhood, swearing to serve each other and the state rather than continue fighting amongst themselves. The bearded warrior in the center holds up a fan as he looks solemnly at the warrior on the left, who grips a pole arm as he glares up at him. The warrior on the right strokes his beard with an enraged grimace, holding a fantastic glaive with a blade issuing from a dragon's mouth. A table in the center is laden with refreshments, and blossoming peach branches fill the background. A fascinating image with lively color and striking, exotic costumes.
