The Seven Lucky Gods in the Treasure Boat Kakemono, circa 1843 - 1846

Comments - Terrific kakemono or vertical diptych depicting the Seven Lucky Gods sailing in their takarabune or treasure ship at New Year's. The fierce warrior Bishamonten stands at the top, dressed in armor and carrying a pole arm. The Goddess Benzaiten is just below him at left, holding a sacred jewel in one hand and wearing a headdress topped with a miniature torii gate. She looks down at Ebisu, who carries a fishing pole over his shoulder. In the front of the boat on either side of the dragon prow are Daikoku with his magic mallet at left and Hotei at right. On the water below, a turtle with moss growing from its shell symbolizes long life, and the crane flying overhead denotes good fortune. A charming design, nicely composed to fit the unusual kakemono format.
