Lord Yukihira in Exile at Suma, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Charming scene of the young brine maidens of Suma Beach. According to legend, the ninth-century courtier Ariwara no Yukihira was exiled to Suma Island for three years, where he met two sisters, Murasame and Matsukaze, who collected seawater for salt making. Both women fell in love with him, and after his departure, they died of grief, with their spirits waiting on the beach for his return. Here, one of the beauties carries a yoke over her shoulder with pails of seawater hanging from it, ready to be processed into salt. White capped waves lap gently at the shore and a rosy glow spreads along the horizon as the sun begins to set. An attractive subject with fine bokashi shading.
